Following the completion of a two-year benchmarking phase in 2005, the UNU-MERIT capacity building programme on Hydrogen Fuel Cells and Transport Alternatives in Developing countries has embarked on a range of activities to facilitate information sharing and networking. A UNU Policy Brief published this month analyses some of the policy choices that countries need to make if they are to avoid future exclusion from this latest wave of technological change.

In a related podcast, Lynn Mytelka, coordinator of the Hydrogen Fuel Cell project highlights the progress made so far and analyses the prospects for developing countries that have already started to plan for hydrogen.

Since its launch in 2004, the Short-Term Training Programme on the Design and Evaluation of Innovation Policy (DEIP) has trained more than 200 policymakers and technical advisers from 25 countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Following requests from developing countries, two workshops took place recently in Nigeria and Mauritius.

Both workshops generated a lot of interest within Ministries and national agencies responsible for science and technology policy. According to DEIP programme coordinator Banji Oyelaran-Oyeyinka the programme has helped to jumpstart planning processes towards a National System of Innovation in both countries. Plans are underway for workshops in Brazil and Argentina in coming months.
