UNU-MERIT director Luc Soete kicks off our new podcast series, which will feature interviews with researchers, policymakers and experts in science, technology and innovation. Philipp Schmidt asks Professor Soete about his vision for the integrated Institute, touching on two research priorities in the next few years: intellectual property rights (IPR), and innovation systems and processes in developing countries. He concludes by highlighting opportunities for established as well as PhD-level researchers interested in joining the Institute.

UNU-MERIT recently participated at the second IDLELO conference on Digital Commons on the theme: "Achieving Millenium Development Goals Through Community Software," held in Nairobi , Kenya from 23-25 February. Rishab Aiyer Ghosh, coordinator of several Open Source projects at UNU-MERIT, was one of the keynote speakers.
IDLELO - a Zulu (South African) word meaning common grazing ground - is convened by the Free Software and Open Source Foundation for Africa (FOSSFA) in Collaboration with the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), Capacity Building International, Germany , and the eGovernment Directorate of Kenya.

'Alternative G8' initiative holds meeting in Maastricht Posted: 0000-00-00 UNU-MERIT hosted a one-day international conference on 8 March to draft a science, technology and development agenda for a proposed new informal grouping of the
leaders of the world's 20 leading countries. The Canadian-led project, dubbed "G20 at the 'Leader's level", or L20, aims to bring together the leaders of the world's 20 leading countries (both North and South) to tackle critical global challenges. More than thirty international science and technology experts attended the meeting, which was co-organized by the Centre for Global studies, the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) and United Nations University. |

AFUNET Planning Meeting takes place in Maastricht Posted: 0000-00-00
A meeting to develop a work programme for the African University Network (AFUNET) initiative takes place at UNU-MERIT from 3-4 March. AFUNET seeks to enhance the capabilities of African universities to take advantage of the opportunities associated with the emergence of the global information society. AFUNET is a project of the UNU- Global Virtual University (GVU) - a consortium of universities that work together to enhance learning for environmental sustainability.

A new UNU Policy Brief examines the economic benefits of open source and open standards and outlines some issues that public organizations should consider in developing policy guidelines in this area.
These are among the issues to be debated at a UNU-MERIT Research Symposium titled: Challenging Intellectual Property Access to Knowledge Issues in Open Source and Medicine taking place at the UN Headquarters, New York, on 13 April 2006. The main speakers are: Louis-Dominique Ouédraogo , Retiring Inspector, UN Joint Inspection Unit; and Tim Hubbard, Head of Human Genome Analysis, Tshe Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, Cambridge , UK . IT Diffusion and Industry and Labour-Market Dynamics Posted: 0000-00-00 UNU-MERIT researcher Bas ter Weel has edited a Feature of the Economic Journal focusing on "IT Diffusion and Industry and Labour-Market Dynamics". The bundle of four articles contains research that discusses major economic implications of the diffusion of IT. They focus on two main implications of IT: (i) networks and industry dynamics, and (ii) IT and workplace organization. The two sets of two articles contribute both original theoretical insights and new empirical results to these themes. Click here fo more information and access to the papers.

S&T Indicators report Posted: 0000-00-00 In November 2005 the 6th edition of the S&T Indicators report of the Netherlands Observatory of Science and Technology (NOWT) was published. Now, an English summary of the report is available for download. NOWT is a formal cooperation between the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) and UNU-MERIT, and is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. NOWT focuses on the collection and analysis of figures about the Dutch research system in a broad sense, including interfaces with public information services related to science, the higher education system, and the technological innovation system. |
