United Nations University and University of Maastricht open joint research and training institute

UNU-MERIT
United Nations University (UNU) and the University of Maastricht have agreed to fully integrate their respective research and training institutes on innovation and technology to create a new global centre, UNU-MERIT. Formally established on 1 Jan 2006, UNU-MERIT cements a long history of collaboration by the two Maastricht-based institutes, which have run a joint PhD training programme since 1995.

Through its specialised international research teams, UNU-MERIT has a unique opportunity to significantly expand the research, policy-analysis and capacity-building activities of both UNU and University of Maastricht . 70 full time and PhD researchers are contributing to research in five broad thematic areas: Micro-based evidence research on innovation and technological change; the role of technology in growth and development; knowledge and industrial dynamics; innovation, entrepreneurship and development; and t he governance of science technology and innovation

UNU-MERIT is developing a programme of decentralised research and training activities to help it play a more direct role in shaping science, technology and innovation policy in developing countries. With a focus on "pro-poor" innovation policy in the area of agriculture and rural development, the regional programmes aim to build up a database of the latest empirical research in this area and disseminate it to policymakers, investors, local and international organisations, and other development actors across the developing world.

UNU-MERIT launches new PhD programme

Alongside its current Economics PhD Programme, UNU-MERIT has launched a new PhD programme on Innovation Studies and Development . The new training programme is designed for competent and highly motivated students from a variety of different backgrounds in social sciences, economics and

engineering, who have demonstrated in prior work, academic distinction and an ability to pursue independent research. Successful graduates will play an important role in studying problems and choices linked to innovation processes within firms and policy institutions as well as the development and use of new technologies, as scholars, policymakers and professionals in their home countries and in the international UN community.
