Mr. Sergey Filippov joined UNU-MERIT in September 2005. His doctoral research project dealt with the complex socio-economic transformations induced by the innovation and new technologies in new EU member states, and the corresponding change of corporate strategies. This research project was carried out under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Geert Duysters and Prof. Dr. Wilfred Dolfsma, and it was completed in May 2009. The doctoral dissertation defence is scheduled for 21 January 2010.

Sergey's academic interests are diverse and include corporate innovation strategies, technology management and technology foresight, multinational subsidiaries, globalisation of innovation, European and national innovation and investment policies, and presence of multinational companies from emerging economies in Europe.

Prior to joining UNU-MERIT, Sergey studied economics in Russia (1997-2002, graduated with Honours), and took several courses in economics, industrial policy and ICT at the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), the Netherlands. Later on he worked both in private and public sectors. He holds an MA degree in Management of the European Metropolitan Region from Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), jointly with Autonomous University of Barcelona, UFSIA University of Antwerp, University of Copenhagen and Ca' Foscari University of Venice (through EURICUR). In 2005 he successfully completed a postgraduate Executive Masters programme in International and European Relations & Management at the University of Amsterdam (UvA).

Sergey Filippov has been invited as a speaker and discussant to a variety of European and international conferences, workshops and training programmes, organised inter alia by UNESCO, UNIDO, UNCTAD, EC, DGAP, DIMETIC, GLOBELICS, and Fondation Europe+ as well as leading European universities. In 2007-2008 he was a coordinator of UNU-MERIT academic research seminars on innovation, technology and development. He is a member of the European International Business Academy (EIBA), the Western European chapter of the Academy of International Business; and a winner of the 2007 EIBA Award for the Best Doctoral Proposal in International Business. Sergey holds a strong affiliation to the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management (EIASM), based in Brussels. He is currently a member of the Executive Committee of the World Network of Young Leaders and Entrepreneurs, headquartered in Geneva.
