Donatus Kosi Ayitey, before joining UNU-MERIT PhD Economics Programme in September 2005, was a Principal Research Assistant at the Institute of Statistical, Social & Economic Research (ISSER) at the University of Ghana. He obtained a B.A. and M.Phil degrees in Economics from University of Ghana specializing in Quantitative Economics/Econometrics, Monetary Economics, Public Finance and International Economics.

He gained admission into the University of Oxford in October 2008 and successfully obtained  a degree in MSc. Applied Statistics in September 2009. From October 2008 to June 2009, he completed a programme on Professional Training for Social Sciences (PTSS) in Said Business School, University of Oxford. This course imbued him with research management skills for an effective research career, learning how to balance performance, budget and time in the delivery of research output.

For his PhD Thesis, he is carrying out a micro based evidence study on the link between technical change (upgrading within firms), Competitiveness ( performance of SMEs) and Poverty  in the Ghanaian Apparel Industry under the supervision of Prof. dr. Pierre Mohnen and Dr. Kaushalesh Lal.

Research Interest includes Economics and Policy studies of Technical Change, Innovation Policy and Development, Productivity Growth and Poverty Assessment, Applied Econometrics/Statistical Data Analysis and International Trade.
