I grew up in Finland, but received my higher education in the United States. In 1996 I obtained my Ph.D. from Rutgers University in New Jersey, and thereafter joined what is today the Centre for International Business and Strategy at the University of Reading in England. Since 1999 I have been Associate Professor of International Business Strategy at the University of Maastricht. From the beginning of 2007, I have also been an Associate Research Fellow at ETLA, the Research Institute of the Finnish Economy, located in Helsinki, where my work touches on different aspects of the role of Finland and Finnish MNEs in the global economy.
One way or another, much of my work has focused on the interplay between governments, regulatory standards and multinational enterprises. Earlier on, I did some work on trade and commercial policy, as well as foreign direct investment in Japan, and Japanese investment abroad. More recently, I have been working on reinvested earnings as a component of FDI, and the role of taxation as a determinant of affiliate re-investment. I have also edited a volume on knowledge transfer within multinational corporations entitled Network Knowledge in International Business (Edward Elgar, 2002). I also have an interest in the issues of multinational environmental strategy and environmental regulation in the global economy.
Over the past few years, most of my efforts have been directed to preparing together with John Dunning the second edition of his widely acclaimed book Multinational Enterprises and the Global Economy, which was published by Edward Elgar in May 2008. This collaborative effort has also resulted in a new research interest, which concerns the role of formal and informal institutions in influencing the determinants and effects of MNE activity.
