Professor Dr. Samia Satti Osman Mohamed Nour is an Affiliated Researcher and former visiting research fellow at UNU-MERIT, Maastricht, the Netherlands. She is a Full Professor of Economics at the Department of Economics, Faculty of Economic and Social Studies, University of Khartoum, Sudan. She is a member of the University Senate and the Faculty Board. Prof Samia is the first female professor in the Faculty of Economic and Social Studies, University of Khartoum since its establishment in 1958, first female professor of Economics, in the Department of Economics, Faculty of Economic and Social Studies, University of Khartoum since the establishment of the Department of Economics, and also the first new professor of Economics in the Department of Economics, University of Khartoum since the mid of 1970s. She is an Affiliated Research Fellow of the African Studies Centre Leiden (ASC), Leiden University, Leiden, the Netherlands. She is an Affiliated Research Fellow of the Economic Research Forum for the Arab Countries (ERF), Cairo, Egypt. She was employed as the coordinator of the Ph.D. programme in Economics (September 2006- May 2009), as an Associate Professor of Economics (January 2012- January 2016), Assistant Professor of Economics (December 2005-December 2011), and as a Teaching Assistant (April 1995- December 2005) at the Department of Economics, Faculty of Economic and Social Studies, Khartoum University.

Prof Samia studied Economics at the Faculty of Economic and Social Studies, University of Khartoum, Sudan, where she graduated with a B.Sc. (First Class Honours) in December 1994. She obtained a M.Sc. in Economics from the Graduate College at the same university in December 1999. She obtained her PhD. degree from the Faculty of Economic and Business Administration, Maastricht University, Maastricht, the Netherlands in November, 2005. She is the first Arab student and the first African female student graduated from the Ph.D. Programme on Economics and Policy Studies of Technical Change: Maastricht Economic Research Institute on Innovation and Technology (MERIT), Faculty of Economic and Business Administration, Maastricht University and the United Nations University (UNU), Maastricht, the Netherlands since its inception in 1995. Prof. Samia received several best student faculty prizes during her undergraduate studies and several research awards and grants during her postgraduate studies. She received the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development Distinguished Scholar Award and Post-Doctoral Fellowship (2010-2011) and the University of Khartoum Scientific Excellence Award Prize in Humanities and Educational Studies (in the field of Economics) (2013).

Prof Samia contributed two background papers for the UNDP Third Arab Knowledge Report 2014. She is the author of several articles published in international refereed journals. She is the author of several books including: Economic Systems of Innovation in the Arab Region (Palgrave Macmillan, USA, 2016), Information and Communication Technology in Sudan: An Economic Analysis of Impact and Use in Universities (Springer, Switzerland, 2015), Technological Change and Skill Development in Arab Gulf Countries (Springer, Switzerland, 2013), and Technological Change and Skill Development in Sudan (Springer, Germany, 2013). She is the co-author of the Arab States Chapter of the UNESCO Science Report in the World (2015). She is the co-author of African Capacity Report (2017) "Building Capacity in Science Technology and Innovation for Africa’s Transformation". She is the co-editor of the Unit of Sudan, African Development Perspective Yearbook (2017) "Science Technology and Innovation Policy for Inclusive Growth in Africa," Volume 20, Institute for World Economics and International Management, University of Bremen, Bremen, Germany.

Prof Samia completed several research projects supported by several regional and international institutions. She has worked as Economic Consultant for international institutions such as the European Investment Bank (EIB), ILO, OECD, UNESCO, UNDP, UNFPA, and UNECA. She was a member of the advisory and reading committee for the UNDP Third Arab Knowledge Report 2014. She is a member of the editorial advisory board, the International Journal of Sudan Research, World Association for Sustainable Development, Brighton, United Kingdom.

Prof Samia stayed as a Guest Researcher at the Nordic Africa Institute (NAI), Uppsala, Sweden from April to July 2017; as a visiting researcher at Christian Michelsen Institute (CMI), Bergen University, Bergen, Norway, May 2017; as a visiting research fellow at UNU-MERIT, Maastricht, the Netherlands from October 2010 to December 2011; as a visiting research fellow at ASC, Leiden University, Leiden, the Netherlands from May to July 2009, as a Ph.D. Intern at UNU-WIDER, Helsinki, Finland from May to July 2002; and as a Ph.D. Fellow at UNU-MERIT, Maastricht University, Maastricht, the Netherlands from September 1999 to November 2005.

Prof Samia's main research interests are in the fields of Economics, Economics of Innovation and Technological Change, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Development Economics, International Economics, Labour Economics, Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development, Endogenous Growth, Human Capital, Public Policy, Migration, Transfer of Knowledge, and Knowledge Economy.
